Yes & Amen

Exclusive Patron Print for August 2019

…the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.

2 Corinthians 1:20

Everyday something is making a promise to you. And I don’t mean just the promises people make to you. Like your kids promising not to fight in the middle of the grocery store, or your husband promising to take out the trash. Sure, those happen, but even more promises are taking place daily in our lives that we may never realize.

Your social media accounts promise to connect you to others. A movie promises to entertain you. Your car promises to get you to work. Your house promises you security.

People and things everywhere are making promises to you. The thing is, they don’t always deliver on them. Rather than connection, social media gives discontentment. The movie leaves you thirsty for more apathy. Your car breaks down. Your keep adding more home security features and never really feel secure. We want even touch how people fail to fulfill their promises to us. I’m sure we are all familiar with experiencing that one, and even being the cause of someone else’s experience.

So what about God’s promises? What of his promise to never leave or forsake us? What of his promise of plans for your life? His promise to help and uphold us with his righteous right hand? His promises to provide strength and endurance? Is he faithful to those?

He absolutely is! But how? Well, when we read Paul’s writing in 2 Corinthians 1:20, we see that all the promises of God find their Yes in Christ, and that is why we can say Amen to them for God’s glory. So how do God’s promises find their yes in Jesus? I want to at least suggest one idea. There may be many more. But I can say for sure that it is because I had no hope to receive anything from God on my own. If it was not for Jesus and his death on the cross in my place, I would still be under God’s wrath. I would only be receiving his judgment. Not his promises of strength or help. But by Christ’s death, his promises become YES to me! And I say AMEN for his glory!
