Light of the World

…Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world.

John 8:12

For many of us today, the concept of dwelling in darkness is difficult to grasp. From nightlights in our hallways, to the ever present glow of city lights, we rarely find ourselves truly enveloped by darkness.

But if you have ever been down in a cave, one where they turn out the lights, you have experienced true darkness. When I was in high school, I went to Ruby Falls in Tennessee. It is an underground waterfall within Lookout Mountain and I remember them turning out the lights for a moment and you truly could not see your hand in front of your face. When in that type of darkness, you have no hope of figuring out which way to go. You can wait as long as you want and your eyes will never adjust, because there is absolutely no light.

This is a great example of how humanity is lost in it’s effort to find truth, because we are blind and live in darkness. We can feel around in this darkness, yet at the end of the day can only guess at which way is right. On our own, we can only assume what is actually true. Many will say this is why there is no absolute truth, because truth is relative to the person experiencing it. But there is absolute, and what we need is light to see it.

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” – John 8:12

Jesus is the light we need! He didn’t just bring a light, he is the light. He doesn’t just illuminate a path, he is the path. He is the truth we are seeking.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” – John 14:6

He is the light of the world. He came to give us truth, and provide the way to have a right relationship with God. He lived the perfect life we could not, he died the death we deserve, and he conquered sin and death on behalf of those who will repent and place their life under his authority. Those that will joyfully surrender to him will find the light of life!
